Used CKD Subaru Forester: Symmetrical AWD from RM 70k, but should you buy one?

If you’re in the market for a proper SUV with AWD capabilities, look no further than the Subaru Forester.

In this article, we will be taking a closer look at the fourth-generation Subaru Forester, codenamed SJ.

On Carsome, used examples of the fourth-generation Subaru Forester are typically priced between the RM 65k mark to the RM 100k mark, depending on mileage and model year.

Overview – Fourth-generation Forester was launched as a turbo-only model, NA ones came later

The fourth-generation Subaru Forester made its debut in Malaysia back in 2013, albeit only in the range-topping 2.0 XT variant, priced at RM 199,800. Said model was imported (CBU) from Japan. The locally-assembled (CKD) version made its introduction in 2016.

At launch, prices of the CKD Subaru Forester started from RM 144,948 and tops out at RM 154,488. The range-topper 2.0 XT, on the other hand, retailed for RM 211,729, still imported (CBU) from Japan.

A year later in 2017, the Subaru Forester 2.0 i-S was launched here, priced at RM 133,818. Kit count is similar to the 2.0 i-P variant, but gains some visual upgrades in the form of a body kit and some contrast red stitching on the inside.

Then in 2018, the Subaru Forester 2.0 STI Performance was introduced here, priced at RM 135,288. Don’t let the STI name fool you though, as the STI Performance-kitted Forester only added a bunch of STI accessories, like body kit, emblems, trim garnishes, carpets, and shift knob.

Being a C-segment SUV, the Forester competes against a host of established models, like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, Proton X70, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

As for the entry-level Forester 2.0 variants, it gets a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre flat-four petrol engine with 150 PS and 198 Nm. The Forester gets the Lineartronic CVT transmission as standard, mated to Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system that deploys power to all four wheels.

Standard features on the Subaru Forester include projector headlights (LEDs on the 2.0 i-P), LED daytime running lights, leather upholstery, aluminium pedals, and Subaru’s signature dashboard-mounted multi-info display (MID).

Safety kit compromises of stability control, ABD, EBD, and 7 airbags. The Subaru EyeSight ADAS suite isn’t available on the fourth-generation Forester.

Which variant to buy?

Considering the Subaru Forester’s rather limited variants in Malaysia, picking a variant is pretty straightforward.

Just go for the Forester 2.0 i-P, as this variant adds LED headlights with Subaru’s trick Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH), powered driver seat with memory function, paddle shifters, and powered tailgate.

Does the Subaru Forester have any common problems?

If you’re looking to buy a used Subaru Forester, you should be pleased to know that the Forester is a relatively problem-free model.

That said, potential owners should keep an eye for these wear and tear items:

• Wheel bearing: Price range from RM 374 to RM 420 per wheel
• Lower arm bush: Price range from RM 75 to RM 490
• Cooling coil: Price range from RM 1,400 to RM 1,800

On top of that, potential owners are encouraged to test drive the car they want to buy and check for any CVT clutch slippage, in the event that the previous owner did not change the CVT fluid according to its recommended 40,000 km service interval.
