Saudi Arabia changes the decades-older custom of modifying Kiswah. The yearly ceremony of replacing Kiswah (Ghilaf-e-Kaaba) will be performed for the first time on the 1st of Muharram, symbolizing the start of the new Islamic calendar. Annually, on 9 Zul Hijjah (Arafat Day), the new and clean Kiswah is placed on the Holy Kaaba. The novel covering, according to Abdul Hamid bin Said Al Maliki, deputy general president for affairs at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Manufacturing the Kiswah al Kaaba, will be decked over the Kaaba on the 1st day of Muharram signaling the start of the new Islamic year.
Throughout the preparations for the Haj season, Makkah officials erected the Kiswah (Ghilaf e Kaaba), the fabric that hangs the Kaaba, by 3 meters and draped the raised area with a two-meter-wide white cotton cloth (Ihram) on all 4 sides, as a yearly tradition. It is done as a preventative step to safeguard the Kiswah because pilgrims who touch or grasp onto it while performing Tawaf (Kaaba circumambulation) might harm the delicate material.
Alterations of Kiswah Over-Time
The Kiswah has seen several alterations throughout the years. It has previously been draped in red, white, green, and now black brocade. The 14m tall robe is made of fine silk fiber and is decorated with gold and silver-plated threads and designs depicting verses from the Holy Quran. There is a belt 95 cm broad and 47 meters in length in the top section of it. There are Qur’anic verses inscribed underneath the belt. All within its own frame, and in the gaps among them is a lamp form with the words. “O live, O Qayyum.” “Oh, Most Merciful, Most Merciful, Oh, Most Merciful.” “Thank you, Lord, of the Worlds.”
Hundreds of textile professionals at a specific facility dedicated to the fabrication of the Kiswah spent around. Million riyals on the production of the Ghilaf-e-Kaaba.
