The off-road SUV segment is heating up in India with several models entering the charts. Once again, the five-door Mahindra Thar has been followed, this time giving us the clearest look yet at the SUV’s rear taillights and styling.

The latest spy sighting gives us insight into the rear design of the five-door Thar. For the three-door model, the longer Thar will have a spare wheel mounted in the center of the tailgate, which remains a separate unit with a hinged bottom half and a top-hinged windshield. The five-door model appears to have a larger central LED brake light than the three-door model, which has a smaller light positioned behind the rear windshield.

The rear overhang doesn’t appear to be much larger than the current Thar, but the five-door model’s extra wheelbase gives it plenty of space for a third row of seats. It also has distinct five-spoke wheels and square wheel arches similar to the Jeep Wrangler. We already know from previous spy shots that the longer the Thar will have the same front styling as the standard version. However, there are bulges on the hood that look like hooded scoops.

While the three-door Thar offers a soft top option, we didn’t expect the long-wheelbase version to do the same. However, it can have a plastic hardtop with removable panels. A fixed metal hardtop can also be provided.

The five-door

Thar engine and equipment will receive the same 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines as the existing Thar. The engine produces 150PS and 130PS respectively, but power output could be higher in the five-door model as it is designed to carry taller people and luggage.

Thar comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and an optional six-speed automatic is offered. These powertrain options will remain unchanged in the longer Thar, which will have a 4×4 system as standard.

Five-door Thar is expected to be expensive compared to the current model with retail prices from Rs 13.59 lakh (at the old showroom). It will compete with the upcoming five-door Force Gurkha alongside the upcoming Maruti Jimny, which will also be a five-door SUV in India.
